About me
I have always been a compulsive writer however for the last four decades I have made my living as a chef. A self confessed ‘writer in chef's clothing’ my writing arc started in the late nineties hosting several food-related and irreverent blogs in the early 2000’s. In 2009 I was awarded the inaugural Country Chef of the year from Country Style Magazine whilst running my own country restaurant. This opportunity enabled me to contribute a monthly column which I still write today, having amassed over 150 articles and recipes. During this period, I’ve continued to write short stories, prose, and poetry. For a year, I contributed to The Hobart Mercury as the restaurant reviewer. In 2015 I co-authored a hardcover book with noted journalist, Elaine Reeves titled, A Table in the Valley, recipes and stories from Tasmania’s Huon Valley, published by Tas Food Books.
In the last few years, I was shortlisted for an ABC short story competition and my poem was featured in the Hobart City Council Poetry in Motion initiative. I have been a short and long listed entrant in the Australian Writers Centre monthly Furious Fiction competition. In 2021 I was shortlisted for the Memoir section in the Lane Cove Literary awards.
In September 2024, my hardcover book ‘Seasons, a year of recipes’, published by ARE Media books, was released. It’s a collection of 60 of my columns and recipes from over the years accompanied by gorgeous photos and exquisite production design. Currently I’m writing an account of my slow-traveling year around Italy with my wife Cate and working on a book of food related short stories.
